The Truth about Toxins, Your Body and the Three Little Known Rules of Detoxing
Detoxing (or Detox) is a relatively new word, yet it describes a process that has been occurring naturally for hundreds of thousands of years. We have all heard the word, we have been told it is good for us, but how many of us understand what it means and why we need to Detox?
The full science is extremely complex and involves a thorough knowledge of several disciplines – biology, physics, chemistry, medicine and so on…. Fortunately, the basic concepts are relatively straightforward. Below is an extremely simplified “Layperson's Guide” to Detoxing.
How We Work
Our bodies are miraculous creations. Evolution has helped them develop over millions of years. During this time they have gradually adapted to changes in the environment, to the food available and even to climatic change. We have also developed incredible mechanisms to “Heal Ourselves” and created fabulous defence systems. Unfortunately, evolution can only work at a very slow pace. The rapid changes to our lifestyles, environment and diet that have occurred during the last 100 years have been much too fast a rate of change for us to cope with – our bodies need help.
Under ideal circumstances we take in a balanced combination of food, water and air as we need it. Sensors

tell our brain when we are hungry or thirsty and breathing is an automatic, continuous process. Special cells within our body extract specific nutrients, vitamins, minerals and other compounds to provide energy and carry out many other functions. Human cells, for example, are designed to die and we are constantly rebuilding these cells as necessary. Our body provides the tools and the food, liquid and air provide the materials.
Occasionally, stress, physical damage or some other factor causes a disturbance in these processes, which leads to an illness or disease. Sensors then activate special cells to go to battle against the disease and marshal the correct nutrients and compounds to remove the “diseased” cells, repair them where possible and, in some circumstances, completely rebuild the cells. This is a continuous process and happens every day. Quite often we are not even aware of it. The body is always striving to achieve a “balance” between defence, rebuilding, removing waste and the bit we know about – living. Sometimes things don’t quite work to plan and the defence systems are temporarily overpowered. We know something is wrong because we identify “Symptoms” – pain, headache, lack of energy, rash, swelling, bruising, stiffness and so on.
